We Are The Sunbursts

We are the sunbursts

We turn rain

Into diamond fringes

Black clouds

Into pink tulle

And sparrows

Into birds of Paradise

~ Florine Stettheimer, 1916

In the article The House that Carrie Built: The Stettheimer Doll’s House of the 1920s, (Art & Design, 1996) Janine Mileaf describes Carrie Stettheimer’s doll house, on view at The Museum of The City of New York, as “a conflation of interior and exterior, imagination and reality.”

Likewise, our AYB doll house project, a deconstructed version of the spaces we use at 180 Franklin Avenue, is a work of imagination and reality.

Several of us have been working on the project over the winter break. We have repainted the structure, customized furniture, invented a way to represent the quirks of the space such as the rows of amber lights along the wood ceiling.
